SLICKGONE LTSW

This water based, hydrocarbon free, concentrate dispersant is highly effective at emulsifying crude oils, fuel oils and water in oil emulsions. It has extremely low toxicity and is internationally approved.

High efficiency concentrate oil dispersant

In May 1983 the Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Industry issued a revised specification for oil slick dispersants.* This specification resulted from the findings of the Institute of Petroleum Working Group on Dispersants, convened to discuss the development of more effective dispersants.
It was recognised that, in view of the growing emphasis in the UK on aerial application of dispersants, a modified test procedure should be introduced for products which were effective applied undiluted and without additional agitation.
Furthermore, the new products should be more effective than the previous diluted products on heavy oils and water-in-oil emulsions (chocolate mousse).

The new specification includes stringent efficiency testing by a laboratory revolving flask technique which has been shown to correlate well with sea trials.  Dasic has responded rapidly to the new requirements and now introduces Slickgone LTSW a high efficiency product fully approved by Warren Spring Laboratory for safety and efficiency.

Slickgone LTSW has extremely low toxicity and is granted a license under the Dumping at Sea Act 1974 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Foods.

Slickgone LTSW is highly effective at emulsifying crude oils, fuel oils and water-in-oil emulsions even at low temperatures, producing oil droplets minute enough to be retained beneath the sea surface where they are rapidly diluted by sub-surface mixing and are eventually biodegraded by micro-organisms.



Application Methods

At Sea -

Slickgone LTSW has been developed for use undiluted and is most effective applied in this way. It is, however, compatible with seawater and can be used diluted to 10% with good results.
Extensive field trials in the UK indicate that an effective treatment rate for dispersants is approximately 1 part dispersant to 20-30 parts of oil. If the average thickness of the oil slick is 0.1 mm, then an application rate of 3-5 imp.gal/acre (30-50 litres/hectare) is required. Slicks, however, tend not to be uniform and thicknesses can vary from microns to several millimetres. It is important, therefore, to try to estimate the thickness of the oil being treated at any given moment and adjust the treatment rate accordingly.

From Aircraft -

Dispersant should be applied to the slick from suitable spray booms in the form of a spray with a volume median diameter of approximately 500 microns. A spray such as this gives good uniform coverage without excessive windborne losses and without droplets with the momentum to penetrate the oil and become lost to the underlying water.

From Boats -

Slickgone LTSW can be diluted with 9 parts sea water in the application equipment to form a 10% solution which should then be sprayed at a treatment rate of 1 part dispersant to 2-3 parts of oil. The efficiency loss on dilution of dispersants is partly compensated for by the use of breaker boards to provide energy to emulsify the oil.
The dispersant can be applied undiluted from boats provided suitable spray equipment is available.

On Beaches -

Slickgone LTSW is extremely effective applied undiluted on beaches, rocks, harbour walls etc. It should be applied at a treatment rate of approximately 1 part dispersant to 10 parts of oil in a fine spray such as from a knapsack sprayer or from other beach spraying equipment.
If possible, it should be applied approximately 10 - 30 minutes before an advancing tide so that the surf line provides energy to disperse the oil. If the energy of the surf line is insufficient, then fire hoses can be directed onto the water adjacent to the beach to provide additional energy.
